REVIVE RESPONDS to the Government commissioned 'Werritty report' by calling for an end to the untold suffering of animals on grouse moors
Many tens of thousands of animals are snared, trapped and killed on Scotland's moors just to ensure that there are more grouse available for sport shooting.
While the Grouse Moor Management Review Group, also known as the 'Werritty report', doesn't address this industrial-scale destruction of Scotland's wildlife, partially due to a limited remit, Revive is determined to ensure this issue is part of the governments agenda. This is why we have handed a copy to every MSP in the Scottish Parliament.
While driven grouse shooting is known to be an environmentally and economically unsustainable use of land, the industry calls this systematic year-round killing 'pest control'. The (mostly) legal methods of killing are cruel and often indiscriminate, catching non-target species and Scotland's protected birds of prey have been known to suspiciously disappear in areas dominated by grouse moors. The report is not an easy read.
The report was produced by The League Against Cruel Sports Scotland and OneKind on behalf of Revive.
At the end of last year, to close the grouse shooting season, we were immensely pleased to hand a copy of the environmental case for reform called A Better Way to every MSP in Scotland. This independent report by Dr Helen Armstrong, an expert in sustainable land management, highlights that a move away from driven grouse shooting can not only end the environmental damage of the industry, but also how the land can be used better to improve biodiversity and sequester carbon while providing greater opportunities for our people as well.
Revive has been active for just over a year now. With over 15,000 of you signing the Revive pledge already, and with four in-depth and fully referenced reports on how radical reform can benefit our people, our wildlife and our environment, we have extremely strong foundations for growing our burgeoning movement and achieving the change we all wish to see.
This year is going to be massive for Revive and we can't wait to tell you about our new and groundbreaking work we have in store.
